About Blue-covered Molt mouth gags

Our Molt mouth gags hold the mouth open during professional dental and oral-surgical work, and they come in three sizes so you can match the instrument to the patient and the procedure. Each gag has ring handles, a hinge, a ratchet and blue-covered contact ends.

Three sizes to compare

10 cm: head span 3.5 cm.
12 cm: head span 4 cm.
14 cm: head span 6 cm.

The first figure is the nominal overall length of the instrument. The head span is the nominal horizontal width across the head in its documented position, which gives a practical sense of how the three sizes step up. Opening the gag with the ratchet then sets the working opening within each instrument's range.

How the Molt design works

The ring handles move the hinged arms apart, and the ratchet holds them in the position you select, so the opening stays steady without constant pressure on the handles. The blue covers sit over the contact ends where the gag meets the teeth.

That mechanism is what sets a Molt gag apart from a bite block or mouth prop, which simply rests between the teeth at a fixed height, and from a cheek retractor, which moves soft tissue aside rather than holding the jaws apart.
