About Mathieu Needle Holders
A Mathieu needle holder is held in the palm rather than through finger rings. Squeezing the spring handles closes the jaws and engages a ratchet catch between the handles, so the needle stays gripped while you place the suture. We supply this pattern with straight jaws in lengths from 16 to 20 cm.
Mathieu or a ring-handled holder?
The palm grip suits clinicians who prefer to hold and release the instrument without moving their fingers in and out of rings. If your team is used to finger rings, compare our Mayo-Hegar needle holders. For fine microsurgical needles, a spring-handled Castroviejo needle holder is the usual choice.
Choosing the length
Pick the length that matches the rest of your suturing set and the reach you need at the surgical site. Longer holders give more reach; shorter ones keep the hand closer to the work. If you are replacing an existing instrument, measure it tip to handle end and quote that length.
What to send with your order
- The length you need, between 16 and 20 cm.
- The quantity.
- Any jaw requirement, such as serrated faces or carbide inserts. We confirm the jaw specification of the quoted model before you order.
- Whether you want an evaluation sample first. We supply 1–3 pieces per pattern.
Cleaning and sterilization
Process the holder according to the instructions supplied with it and your facility's validated protocol. Instruments with a ratchet are normally cleaned and sterilized with the ratchet disengaged so that steam and cleaning solution reach the joint.
