About Anterior Bracket-Removing Pliers

At the end of orthodontic treatment the brackets are removed from the teeth, a step called debonding. Anterior bracket-removing pliers are shaped for the front teeth: the two flanged jaws close around the bracket so that pressure lifts it off the tooth surface. Ours are about 6.7 inches long, with recessed handles and gold-coloured handle ends.

Bracket remover or band remover?

  • Anterior bracket remover (this plier): two opposing flanged metal jaws, shaped for brackets on the front teeth.

What identifies an anterior bracket-removing plier?

This one is an anterior, straight-access pattern with a pair of flanged metal jaws shaped to engage a bracket. The anterior label and the jaw form identify the pattern. They do not mean the plier suits every bracket material or every proprietary bracket design, which depends on the bracket system and its specified removal instrument.

What is the purpose of the flanged jaws?

The flanged jaws are the contacts that engage a bracket, unlike the broad, rounded pads of a utility plier. Their shape is the key feature when you compare bracket-removing patterns. The jaw shape on its own is not a manufacturer-approved removal method for a particular bracket system.

How does this differ from a band-removing plier with a white pad?

A band remover has a supporting tooth-side pad opposite a band-engaging beak. This anterior bracket remover has paired flanged metal jaws and, in this configuration, no fitted pad. The contacts differ because the appliances differ: an encircling band on one side and a bonded bracket on the other.
