About Fine Ligature Wire Cutter

Ligature wire is the thin wire that ties an archwire into a bracket. Once the tie is twisted tight, the loose end is cut short so it does not catch the cheek or lip. A fine ligature cutter has a narrow head so it can reach between brackets and cut close. Ours is 12.5 cm long, with a TC (tungsten carbide) working end.

What it is for

Use it for ligature wire. It is not made for heavy archwires; for cutting the archwire behind the last molar, see our distal end cutter. If you need to check the cutter against a particular wire, tell us the wire material and size and we confirm in your quotation.

How it is made

  • Overall length 12.5 cm.
  • Fine, narrow cutting head.
  • TC (tungsten carbide) working end.

Ordering

  • Sold as one complete cutter.
  • Evaluation samples of 1–3 pieces per pattern are available.

Care

Check that the cutting edges meet along their full length and are free of nicks. Cutting wire heavier than intended can damage the edges. Follow the supplied processing instructions and your facility's validated protocol.

For holding ligatures and archwires, see our curved How utility pliers and Weingart utility pliers.

Fine Ligature Wire Cutter Questions

What type of wire is a fine ligature cutter intended to trim?

Soft ligature wire, the small tie wire used to secure an archwire to a bracket. This cutter has a narrow, fine cutting head for that job. The ligature is a different workpiece from the main archwire, and that difference should guide which instrument you choose.

Is a ligature cutter the same as a distal-end cutter?

No. A ligature cutter trims soft tie wire, while a distal-end cutter is a separate pattern for cutting the end of an archwire. The workpiece and the head design differ, and a fine head does not give a ligature cutter an archwire rating or a cut-and-hold feature.

What is the purpose of the narrow cutting head?

A narrow head gives a small cutting contact for fine ligature wire, which is the feature to compare with bulkier cutter heads when you choose a tool for that wire. Head shape does not give a rated wire diameter or guarantee a flush cut.

What does TC mean on this fine ligature cutter?

TC stands for tungsten carbide. This cutter is specified with a TC working end and a narrow, fine cutting head. TC describes how the working end is made; the fine-ligature pattern is what identifies the soft tie wire the cutter is intended for.

How should I compare wire-capacity ratings between ligature cutters?

Compare the wire material and the maximum diameter stated for the exact cutter model, in the same units, and keep soft-wire and hard-wire ratings apart. No numerical capacity is established for this fine ligature cutter, so another manufacturer's rating cannot be used as its cutting limit.
