The guide elements relate to positioning and spacing in implant preparation, and the corresponding pins provide spatial references for identified positions. They are different instrument forms within the assortment, which is why their quantities and nominal references are listed separately.

A positioning assortment groups spatial-reference tools, while a full surgical kit has its own specified drilling, driving and other instrument groups. One implant system, for example, describes a guided kit used with a planned surgical guide and matched cylinders and sleeves.

In one implant system's documented workflow, the guide is fabricated from the patient's virtual treatment plan using specified master cylinders and pilot sleeves, and is then used with a patient-specific protocol and the matched guided-surgery kit. That planning-and-guide configuration is different from a reusable positioning instrument assortment.
