About Tofflemire Matrix Retainers

A Tofflemire retainer holds a thin metal matrix band around a tooth so that a filling can be packed against it and shaped. The band loops through the slotted head; one knob locks the band in the retainer and the other tightens or loosens the loop around the tooth. It is one of the most familiar instruments on a restorative tray.

How it works

  • Thread the band into the slotted head in the direction the cavity needs.
  • Turn the locking knob to secure the band.
  • Place the loop over the tooth and turn the adjusting knob to tighten it.
  • After packing, loosen the band and remove the retainer before taking the band out.

Choosing bands

Matrix bands are separate and come in different widths and shapes. Check that the bands you use fit the slotted head on a sample retainer before ordering in quantity.

Tofflemire or sectional matrix?

A Tofflemire band wraps around the whole tooth. A sectional matrix covers one side and is held with a ring placed with sectional matrix ring forceps.

Tofflemire Matrix Retainers Questions

Is a Tofflemire retainer the same thing as a matrix band?

No. The retainer is the adjustable holding instrument, and the matrix band is the strip it holds. A Tofflemire is associated with a circumferential band, and keeping the two items separate helps when you reorder a retainer or choose band supplies.

What do the slotted head and adjustment knobs do?

The slotted head receives and holds the band, and the screw-adjusted mechanism secures it and sets the band loop. This retainer has the characteristic slotted head and knurled adjustment knobs. Those features identify a retainer, as opposed to a band-placement tweezer or sectional-ring forceps.

Does a matrix band's width give the retainer's overall length?

No. Band width measures the consumable strip, while overall retainer length measures the complete adjusting instrument, and the slotted head has its own geometry. Compare those fields separately when you match a retainer and a band; a band-width number is not the retainer's overall-length specification.

Does "universal Tofflemire" mean every matrix band will fit?

No. Universal identifies the Tofflemire pattern; it does not prove compatibility with every matrix band or proprietary matrix system. Band dimensions and the retainer's band interface still matter, so use the pattern name together with the actual band specification instead of treating universal as an all-system fit.

How does a Tofflemire retainer differ from sectional matrix ring forceps?

A Tofflemire retainer holds a circumferential band and adjusts its loop. Sectional matrix ring forceps handle a separation ring, which is a different component from the sectional band. The tools have different roles in matrix systems, so being restorative instruments does not make them substitutes.
